We need to organize Spec Scooter

Think about it. For $2000, you can buy an old 50cc scooter, fix it, buy gear, and numbers. Pull up to a karting track/parking lot with cones, pay race fees, sign a liability waiver, and go toe-to-toe with other scooterists. Then you ride the scooter home after the race, and commute with it during the week. Why aren’t we funding this?

That's more drag and circuit racing, I was thinking more of a wheel-to-wheel auto cross and kart track spec series.

Can the panthers be modified?

Very barely. Apart from gutting the interior for a cage, it should be OEM. Things like springs and shocks could be control items where there’s one super cheap supplier that’s allowed for replacement like a monroe unit or something, but for the most part it’s just standard Crown Vics and Town Cars battling it out. No CVPIs or Marauders.

Because Groms exist, and the Grom Cup.

Aww. I was thinking of building a twin-turbo coyote P71 with full handling bolt-ons and a 9” rear end.

Yes, but this is cheaper than a Grom Cup, as with gear, bike, and entry fees, you're looking at $4000 vs $2000 for spec scooter.

50cc’s is all you need to have a pile of fun. My first bike was a 50cc 2stroke (with 5spd tho) a 1990 Honda NS50 I bought it for $120 bucks in 2001. You wouldn’t even believe how much fun that bike was. I drove it in the woods like a dirt bike and on the street. Best $120 bucks I have EVER spent in my life.

That might be cool, but I’m thinking about being competitive for cheaper than LeMons.

They made enough of them and they’re really not that special. I’m not worried about it. I know that there are tons of people on here that have a love afair with them, but they really aren’t the wondercars they’re made out to be. If you’re broke and need a cheap ride that won’t break down often and will be cheaply and easily fixable when it does, it fits the bill. There’s more to a car’s quality than the number of cylinders it has and drive wheels. Almost all of my FWD cars have been more fun than a Panther.

I was gonna mention Grom Prix but I see nermal beat me to it.

Spec scooter would be fun as hell though, and you’re right, a lot cheaper than Groms, by at least half.

I’m sure a person could find one but they weren’t extremely popular even back then.

In my small town two buddies I know each bought one brand new for something like $1500 bucks. Those two bikes exchanged hands many many times. Until I eventually bought one of them. Another friend of mine (we call him Meatball no joke) ended up with the other one.

It was the perfect mode of transportation for a 14 year old. These 2 bikes are the only ones I ever saw but there has to of been more out there.

So I just had to look on Craigslist, there are a few out there but people want obscene money for them - $1500 to $2500. I hope they are dreaming because I doubt they should be worth anywhere near that much.

Clearly they are off their rocker. They were under $1500.00 brand new. A good running one should be $500 bucks max! They are not much of a collectors item so I have no idea why they would want that much.

This would be awesome especially if you just made it so the base engine had to be 50cc and allowed big bore kits and require everyone to use GY6 clones so no one wastes their money on a zuma

I have an even better way to make things fair. Endow each scooter with the same power-to-weight ratio by adding ballasts to faster scooters.

see the problem isn’t always weight as much as it is surface area... see I’m the kind of guy who you can count my ribs most days, but with wide shoulders and a 6’3” frame I get held back by the wind

I have more. I collected a bunch of links for a post I was going to write for Oppo a couple of years ago, but never got round to it. If you want to, knock yourself out.

a Minarelli AM6 engine. 6 speed liquid cooled From an rs50. Running a tone of Metrakit performance parts and a turbocharger, It’s life blood had also been tampered with to run alongside Nitrous Oxide. Running just over 24HP for a 50cc engine. it really is something quite special.

So that’s roughly 480bhp/litre.

And here I thought I was being helpful, LOL. I’ve often thought about picking up a cheap 150cc scooter as an around-town runabout.....would need my motorcycle license first though.
